The biggest and most rewarding “safari” to foot is the vast private plantation of the resort itself. The Rain Country Resort is set within acres of coffee, pepper, cardamom and vanilla, interspersed with fruit trees, and native jungle. The property houses its own network of walking trails; you can walk on these trails for hours, and keep the discovery of the varied flora and even the fauna to yourself. The air is clean, sound filled with birds, smell of spices- all promised a wonderful multi-sense experience. This isn’t a walk it’s a full immersion into an working ecosystem.
Hotel provides guided nature walks, which are a must. A very learned guy will take you through the plantation showing all the spices and how they are grown and make you spot as well as identify the various species of birds including Malabar Whistling Thrush, hornbills etc that wing the area which in fact forms part and parcel of their property. I Many tourists consider this information interesting and informative; without a guide, it is impossible to get to know a variety of flora and fauna of Western Ghats better just on the doorstep.
Apart from the plantation itself, the resort is extremely isolated. There is no way of marching along to any shops, cafes or any other restaurants. The entire idea of the resort has been built as a paradise of isolation where nature’s tranquillity may be relished. Thus, all on-foot exploration is confined within the property’s boundaries and that too only along the nearest forest trails- the very reason most visitors come to stay here.
